Robbers hit bulk carrier off Guinea.
The IMB reports that earlier today a bulk carrier was boarded by seven armed robbers around 5.5nm off Conakry, Guinea.
According to the report, the robbers boarded the bulk carrier, taking two crew members hostages. The robbers beat the crew men before escaping with crew cash and personal property. The report doesn’t state whether the remaining crew made it to the safety of the vessel’s citadel.
The incident comes a week after a UK-flagged ship, the Vectis Osprey, was boarded by armed pirates around 28nm South of Bonny, Nigeria. In that incident, the crew reached the ship’s citadel and the alarm and SSAS were activated, ensuring the Nigerian Navy were alerted.
The incident underlines the dangerous nature of Gulf of Guinea waters for merchant ships and the oil and gas industry.
