Bangladesh media reports that a cargo vessel was attacked by armed robbers on Friday.
According to reports, eight or nine men armed with bladed weapons boarded the ship from a trawler on the River Tentulia, Bhola district, before attacking the crew, leaving five men injured. The robbers fled the ship with crew cash and personal belongings.
Piracy and armed robbery in the Bay of Bengal is rife, but the targets are more commonly fishing vessels with little or no protection. Kidnapping is commonplace and very few incidents are reported to agencies such as the IMB. This means getting a true picture of the situation at sea is virtually impossible. This attack, against a cargo vessel carrying clinker, suggests an increase in violence and MAST will be monitoring the situation.
