After years of hesitation on the part of political authorities in Libya since NATO ended its military intervention in the country in 2011, Tripoli has finally submitted a request to the alliance for assistance in reforming its security structures.
“Last night I received a formal request from Libyan prime minister Fayez al-Sarraj,” NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told reporters on 16 February at the conclusion of a two-day meeting of allied defence ministers. “This request has now been received, and the North Atlantic Council will discuss how to take it forward as soon as possible.”
