Mast A key attribute to success – Resilience!
Zoe Pyle, Finance Director of MAST attended a Reed Finance and Reed Accountancy Business Leaders event at The Essex County Cricket grounds at Chelmsford with guest speaker Dr Steve Bull.
Steve is a Performance Psychologist who has worked in the sporting industry for over 30 years, through 3 Olympic Games and with the England Cricket team for 16 years.
We all know that being a great performer does not necessarily make you a great leader and Steve shared his experience and beliefs for which he sees creates a successful leader and team.
The key attribute is Resilience! Attitude is certainly a decision, you choose how you want to think and we all want Energy Givers in our teams rather than Energy Sappers.
Interestingly Psychological resilience is defined as an individual’s ability to successfully cope with adversity. Adversity and stress can come in the shape of family or relationship problems, health problems, or workplace and financial worries, among others. Resilience is the ability to bounce back from a negative experience with ‘competent functioning’. Resilience is not a rare ability; in reality, it is found in the average individual and it can be learned and developed by virtually anyone. Resilience is the result of successfully coping with distress, rather than a personality trait. It is a process of individuation through a structured system with gradual discovery of personal and unique abilities.
Steve recommended author Jim Collins, Built to last : Successful Habits of Visionary Companies – which should be on everyone’s reading list! In ever changing markets, where companies are constantly pushing for “more” for “less” and customers become more sophisticated, it is important to remember that success starts with mindset!
Thank you to Reed for hosting the event and for the invite!
