In the Gulf of Guinea, one incident has been reported in the period observed. Ghana’s Multinational Maritime Coordination
Centre has received new equipment via the EU SWAIMS scheme, to improve maritime surveillance in the region. The Nigerian Navy has reportedly broken up a people smuggling gang in the country and Operation Delta Safe troops have made further gains against illegal oil refineries in the country.
In the Indian Ocean, the Pakistan-led AMAN-23 exercise is underway. EUNAVFOR and the IMO have again urged shipping in the region to remain vigilant while transiting, and US forces have seized a large quantity of drugs in the Gulf of Oman.
In European waters, it is thought that Russia has used an unmanned surface vessel (USV) to attack a bridge in Ukraine. Concerns remain that Russia is slowing the process of grain exports via the Black Sea corridor. The UK government said that over 2,000 people had so far crossed the English Channel from France in 2023.
