Stowaways: the hidden problem at sea

A rise in stowaway incidents at South African ports over the past two months proves that despite international efforts, the issue is as prominent as ever. But how do trespassers make it aboard a ship, what can be done to prevent them and who bears the cost and responsibility once the trespasser is found?
In November last year, marine insurer The Swedish Club urged ship-owners to be on alert following a rise of stowaway incidents in South African ports over the previous two months. The numbers were expected to rise further in the run-up to the Christmas holidays, as individuals start looking for free passage home.
