In the Gulf of Guinea, there has been one incident reported in the period observed. Nigerian media has alleged that security personnel and some oil company staff are involved in oil theft and illegal refining. Operation Delta Safe personnel have arrested two high-profile piracy suspects in Rivers State. Nigeria’s National Petroleum Company has released a new phone app designed to make it easier for people to report oil-related crime.

In the Indian Ocean Region, Iran has seized a vessel suspected of smuggling fuel in the Arabian Gulf. The Iranian media also report that the Navy ‘scared away’ a group of pirates in the Red Sea, although this has not been confirmed by independent observers.

In European waters, grain exports from Ukraine continue, with hopes that 3 million tonnes can be shipped in September. Russia has called upon Western countries to export grains from its own ports. The UK Ministry of Defence has reported that 20,000 people have crossed the English Channel in small boats from France to the UK so far in 2022.
