Major General Jonathan Shaw CB CBE is a former senior British army officer with prolonged experience on operations and in Whitehall. He read Politics and Philosophy at Oxford University before joining the Parachute Regiment in 1980. He saw service in the
Falklands campaign, Northern Ireland, Cyprus, the Balkans (twice), Afghanistan and Iraq. He served with both the SAS and SBS before becoming Director Special Forces. His last command appointment was as General Commanding the Multinational Division in
Basra, Iraq in 2007. He ended his career as Assistant Chief Defence Staff, International Security policy and Global Issues, including the nuclear deterrent and cyber security.
Since retiring in 2012, he has been a consultant, a trainer and a commentator on international defence and security issues. He is a public speaker on geopolitics, leadership and cyber issues and is a Visiting Fellow at Reading University.
He is the author of “Britain in a Perilous World; the Strategic Defence and Security Review We Need”.
